We are proud to announce the release of a brand new Social Source Commons!
There are three core components to the upgrade:
- User Interface Redesign: Based on the great feedback we’ve received from many of you, we’ve overhauled the look and feel of SSC. We’ve worked to make the new site familiar to existing users, while integrating new features and streamlining navigation. We’d love to know what you think.
- Community Toolboxes: We have generalized the concept of “Personal Toolboxes” to allow users to share lists of tools with one another. In a fashion similar to Flickr photo albums, Community Toolboxes will let you create groups of tools by theme, such as “Tools that run on old hardware” or “Tools I use when I’m travelling”. To explore Community Toolboxes and start creating your own, click on the “My Toolboxes” link once you’re logged in to SSC.
- Enhanced Searching, Tracking and Browsing: We’ve improved the search system, and added features to your SSC home page to help you better find and track the tools you care about.
For your click-through convenience, you can check it all out at
www.socialsourcecommons.org
We heartily invite your feedback and questions as you explore the new Social Source Commons!
We also want to shout out Brattleboro Technology Collective and Quilted for their excellent work in getting the new platform launched!

Welcome to the SSC Blog! Our plan is to periodically update here with news related to SSC, new or interesting software tools that we’ve been seeing, and other random chatter that might be of interest to the nonprofit technology world.
My name is Tim Wescott, and I’ll be the one primarily responsible for what you see here. I’m also the most active member on SSC— not to brag, since it’s pretty easy to be the most active when that’s what you’re paid to do. My goal is to find new tools that can help nonprofits accomplish their mission, and provide helpful information so that they can better use those tools.
I hope my efforts will keep SSC an interesting and valuable resource for the software needs of NPO’s and NGO’s. Feel free to drop me a line at tim – at – aspirationtech – dot – org if you have any questions about SSC, or any of the tools we have listed on our site, or if you know of some new information or tool that I can enter into SSC. And, as always, criticism and praise is always appreciated.

If you’ve used Social Source Commons at all over the past 6 months, you’re likely familiar with the prodigious work of Tim Wescott, our SSC product manager. Tim has helped drive a five-fold growth in our database of tools since his arrival, and has supported our community of users while helping to lead the redesign of the site.
Tim is working for Aspiration as part of the CTC VISTA Program, and we’re grateful to have his big brain on the team!
We’ll be using the SSC Blog to more actively narrate our efforts to map the universe of tools available for nonprofit needs, and Tim will be leading that blogging charge. We’ll welcome your comments in that process, and Tim will be reaching out to the SSC community to interview you about your tools usage and wish lists.
Tim, why don’t you say hello and tell our blog audience a little more about yourself?

If you haven’t already filled out our user survey, please take a few minutes to tell us how to make SSC more valuable to you!

Thanks to all you amazing Beta Testers who are putting SSC through its paces and telling us how we can make the platform more valuable in your work, and easier to use. We really appreciate the feedback, and encourage everyone to keep it coming. We hear you, and we’re integrating new features and key fixes for a new version which we’ll post soon.
The feedback we’re getting falls into several consistent areas:
- Shared “Community Toolboxes”: many users want the ability to collaboratively create lists of tools in specific categories such as “eAdvocacy” or “Case Management” or “Micro Finance”. We’ve already got the “back end” code for this support ready, and now we’re working with the excellent folks at Quilted to integrate that support into the user interface.
- Support for “Communities of Practice” or “Sub-Communities”: While the current platform lets you find out what anyone else in the community is using, it doesn’t answer the question “what are folks like me using”? We are working to design support for creating communities based around interests and identities.
- Support for collaboration: In the current Beta, you can find folks who use the same tools as you, but you can’t connect or collaborate with them beyond leaving a comment! We are inviting discussion on how to integrate the platform with apppropriate collaborative tools to support peer support and knowledge sharing.
- Better searching, filtering, and syndication: the current search features are, to be kind, “lacking” :^) In addition, RSS feeds don’t provide enough detail and context, and can’t be filtered to by type of information. We’re working hard to punch up this support and make it easier to find and track the tools you care about.
- Usability, usability, usability: we’ve gotten great feedback on making it easier to add tools and contacts, edit and tag tools, and improve the data model to make more sense.
Of course, we’ve gotten lots of other amazing suggestions and feature ideas, and very detailed bug reports (“D’oh!”). We’re tracking them all, and incorporating as many as possible into upcoming releases.
We’ll send out an announcement when there’s a next version of SSC live for testing, and in the meantime, please keep telling us about new tools you find and how we can better publish and organize the info!

We are very grateful to have such a diverse and knowledgeable group of eRiders, developers and NPO/NGO technologists helping us kick the tires on this “beta” version of the Social Source Commons.
Our goal is to build a resource that provides:
- A map of what software is being used for NPO/NGO needs
- A place to find tools for specific purposes
- A process for sharing knowledge about software and associated resources
- Aggregation of useful information for each tool
- A community hub for anyone passionate about using and improving software for NPO/NGO work
Thanks to everyone who logs on, builds their toolbox and tags, tags, tags!

This is the first “live” version of the Social Source Commons! We are really excited to have you visiting and experimenting with the site.
The site is in beta stage right now, which means most of the basic functions work, but we have a lot more plans for what it may do in the future.
Please create an account and start adding tools to your own toolbox.
We welcome your questions and suggestions. Thanks for visiting the Social Source Commons!
