Showcasing Some SSC Feeds

By Matt on September 4, 2008

Have you ever wondered what those little orange antenna buttonsRSS Button floating around the Social Source Commons website were for?  Well, my friends, you are about to learn the beauty of “Feeds,” a nifty little feature on SSC that lets you keep track of things that you’re interested in.  And if you already know what “feeds” are, hopefully this post can enlighten you about the rich array of feeds that SSC has to offer.

For the uninitiated, Wikipedia defines a feed as a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content.  They take advantage of RSS technology and are otherwise known as RSS Feeds.  “RSS” stands for Really Simple Syndication.  Using a RSS reader, you can track multiple feeds that track updated information on a website.

For example, let’s say you wanted to know when new tools were added to SSC but didn’t want to keep checking the site at random intervals hoping something new was available.  All you need to do is click on the orange “Feed” button next to the “New Tools” headline on the SSC homepage.  This gives you a link that you can put into your RSS reader.  Then your RSS reader shows you new tools as they are added to SSC.  No more surfing to the home page to see what the newest tool is.  Let the reader do the work for you.  The cool thing about RSS is that readers can collect information on large numbers of feeds and present it in a coherent fashion.

“Feeds” are available for many types of SSC information.  Let’s check out some of the feeds we can follow on SSC:

As you can see, “Feeds” can keep you up-to-date on many aspects of Social Source Commons.  Some you probably won’t need, but others might save you a lot of time and provide a powerful dashboard into the knowledge being shared on SSC.  You can also find out more about SSC feeds here.  Happy Feeding!

A Few Good Community Toolboxes

By Matt on August 27, 2008

As far as I am concerned, there is nothing more useful on Social Source Commons than a well-made community toolbox.  A community toolbox is a toolbox that someone has created with a particular theme that they can invite others to build on.  This allows community members to contribute their knowledge of tools and resources.  Toolboxes then serve as collaboration hubs that connect SSC members and aggregate knowledge.  And we all know what that means…  Increased Community!

Let’s check out some good examples of Community Toolboxes already up and chugging away on SSC:

Time Tracking Tools

Compiling a variety of nifty tools to help you and your team members figure out just how much time to spend making that ham sandwich, the Time Tracking Toolbox is a good example of a toolbox that compiles many tools, all with a similar focus.

CiviCRM World

This is a good example of a toolbox putting together tools that expand the utility of a single program.  CiviCRM is an open source Constituent Relationship Manager and the CiviCRM World Toolbox shows you the other tools on SSC that can complement it, saving you a trip to Google.

Global Voices Editor Toolbox for OS X

The Global Voices Toolbox is a great example of the customization that is possible within a toolbox.  The author of this toolbox, David Sasaki, added customized descriptions to each of the tools to explain how they are useful when working with Global Voices.  He also included great screenshots that show you exactly what he’s talking about.  On top of the basic tool descriptions, he also fleshed out the Community tab by adding Mailing Lists and Chat Rooms that relate to Global Voices.  As a result, the Global Voices Editor Toolbox is a great example of taking advantage of toolbox customization.

Open Translation Tools

Within a SSC toolbox, information can abound.  Perhaps no other toolbox showcases this better than the Open Translation Tools Toolbox.  Created as a complement to Aspiration’s Open Translation Tools Event 2007, the toolbox is able to showcase the connections between the event and the software and online resources that were featured.  Not only relevant tools, but also online documentation and community links are aggregated under the toolbox so that people can have a rich resource about Open Translation.  Under the Community tab you can find discussion lists for Open Translation while under the Support tab you can find event documentation, videos and links.  This toolbox even aggregates its own feeds, so that under the Feeds tab you can see new info about Open Translation as it comes in.  All of this information combined makes it a great resource for information regarding Open Translation and that, in turn makes it a great community toolbox.

There is a lot that can be done when creating a community toolbox.  From custom descriptions to adding supporting content to aggregating feeds right in the toolbox, SSC toolboxes allow for one-stop information shopping.  I hope this mini-whirlwind journey through the joys and wonders of community toolboxes gives you a better idea of what they’re there for and what you can do yourself when you create a community toolbox.  And in a future post I’ll take you through the steps of creating a community toolbox so you can get your hands dirty.  So check out what Community Toolboxes are out there on SSC and take ’em for a spin!

Surveying CTC VISTA Software Tools

By Matt on August 22, 2008

One of the projects that we’re implementing here at SSC is a survey of Americorps CTC VISTAs such as myself.  Every CTC VISTA is placed at a nonprofit somewhere in the United States.  Our roles center on capacity building for our organizations and behind the scenes, sustainable contributions to their goal.  The hope is that after a VISTA’s term of service ends, the work that they did and the impact that they made remain with the organization in a sustainable way.

Because of this capacity building focus as well as the diverse organizations to which they are assigned, CTC VISTAs have a wide array of tools that they find useful in their nonprofit work.  So surveying CTC VISTAs about the tools that they use on an everyday basis should be a pretty random, but at the same time, interesting look into a wide sampling of the nonprofit software usage in the U.S.

We’ll keep you updated on what we find.  In the meantime, you can follow the Toolbox at http://socialsourcecommons.org/toolkit/show/1242/.

Bringing More Value to the SSC Community

By Matt on August 11, 2008

We here at Aspiration are constantly trying to offer greater value in the Social Source Commons for our users.  We realize that our community of users is the most important part of this undertaking and we’re starting to form some new Community Engagement goals to address the subject of you, the users.  Here’s a quick run down of what we’re looking at.

1.  Provide better engagement for our users

Currently, the Social Source Commons does a good job for the anonymous users that come to find out what software resources are available to them. However, we are striving to step up efforts to make the Social Source Commons a useful website for returning users.  We want to provide more compelling answers to the question “Why should I visit regularly?”

2.  Encourage more users to tell us about the tools they are using and discovering

SSC’s overarching goal is to map out the software that nonprofits are using in their mission and operations work.  We want SSC to be a place where our users actively share the tool additions to the site.  Ideally, this would mean that our users are the primary driving force behind the software information being added.

3.  Facilitate knowledge sharing between users

In addition to sharing tools, we would like to see our users become more involved in sharing knowledge about specific tools that they are using.  This ranges from simply commenting on a tool to adding community and support information to a tool.  Even creating community toolboxes that everyone can add to allows users to better share their knowledge.  We hope that SSC can serve as a venue for capturing this wealth of knowledge that exists in the heads of nonprofit technologists in the U.S. and around the world.  Again, we want the users to be the driving force behind the website so that they have ownership over the resources that they themselves see as a need.

4.  Tell stories about how SSC users are employing tools in their work

Soon, I’ll be reaching out to interview SSC users about the tools that they use and recommend.  Interviewing users about their own tools gives others a first-person perspective on tools useful for a specific situation and allows us all to gain a little insight on what might be useful for ourselves.  As we start talking to more users and hearing their individual stories, our hope is that the SSC community will grow as more people join in the discussion.

5.  Sustain dialog with the SSC community through our blog

The SSC blog has been dormant in the absence of a community manager but we look forward to opening this line of communication with the SSC community.  I’ll be posting more and inviting you to help us shape our strategy by commenting on what you read.  To increase user involvement as well as a sense of transparency with our Social Source Commons, we need to keep a line of communication open between the users and us.  However, the process is only successful if both parties are active participants in the conversation.  In this way, we increase the communication between ourselves and the users, in effect creating a community.  A “commons” if you will.

Hopefully this gives you a better idea of just what we’re thinking behind the scenes at Social Source Commons.  If you have any comments or questions don’t hesitate to drop me a line (sscblog@aspirationtech.org), drop me a comment or just drop something so we know that at least Goal #5 is successfully on its way.  We invite your thoughts on the fundamental question:

What can we do to make SSC more useful to you?

We’ve gotten great additions recently from a number of SSC users, including:</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/profile/rolf">Rolf</a>, who created a toolbox called <a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/toolkit/show/564">Thunderbird as RSS Reader</a>, detailing the collection of plugins and tools he uses to manage his RSS feeds;</li> <li><a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/profile/lena">Lena</a>, who added <a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/tool/show/1901/">CopyWrite</a> and <a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/tool/show/1900/">Grammarian X</a> to her personal toolbox, and put <a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/tool/show/1899/">picnik</a> in her <a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/toolkit/show/418">Basic media editing</a> toolbox;</li> <li><a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/profile/shanehill00">Shane</a>, who built a collection of <a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/toolkit/show/541">Tools for building scalable web apps</a>; and</li> <li><a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/profile/Deacon78">Deacon78</a>, who created <a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/toolkit/show/568/">Production Toolkit</a>, listing websites for the independent filmmaker.</li> </ul> <p>Thanks to all you users who are putting your data and knowledge into SSC!</p> <p>An interesting number we speculate on from time to time is “what is the size of the noprofit software tool universe”? In other words, what is the total count of software tools relevant to nonprofit needs? It’s a squishy number, based on a range of issues:</p> <ul> <li>What qualifies as “nonprofit” or “<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGO">NGO</a>” software?</li> <li>What tools are “general” tools, versus sector-specific tools (health and human services, human rights, legal, etc)?</li> <li>What is a tool? With hosted web apps playing a larger and larger role in the technology footprint of most organizations, the definition of “tool” continues to evolve. We’re fairly permissive on “tool-ness” when it comes to web apps; if it’s an interactive site that provides unique value to individual users, we’re inclined to call it a tool.</li> </ul> <p>We welcome your comments on any and all of the above!</p> <!-- AddThis Advanced Settings above via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Advanced Settings below via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons above via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons below via filter on the_content --><div class="at-below-post-homepage addthis_tool" data-url="https://blog.socialsourcecommons.org/2007/08/ssc-surpasses-1900-tools/"></div><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --> <!--END .entry-content .article--> </div> <!--BEGIN .entry-meta .entry-header--> <br /><br /><div class="entry-meta entry-header" style="background: #fafafa; border-color: #aaa #ddd #ddd #aaa; border-style: solid; border-width: 1px; color: #444; padding: 7px; font-size:1em; height: 15px;"> <!--BEGIN .entry-meta .entry-footer--> <div class="entry-meta entry-footer" style="font-size:.9em; float: left;"> <span class="entry-categories">Posted in <a href="https://blog.socialsourcecommons.org/category/ssc/" rel="category tag">SSC</a>, <a href="https://blog.socialsourcecommons.org/category/toolboxes/" rel="category tag">Toolboxes</a>, <a href="https://blog.socialsourcecommons.org/category/tools/" rel="category tag">Tools</a>, <a href="https://blog.socialsourcecommons.org/category/uncategorized/" rel="category tag">Uncategorized</a></span> <!----> <!--END .entry-meta .entry-footer--> </div> <span class="comment-count" style="float:right;"><strong><a href="https://blog.socialsourcecommons.org/2007/08/ssc-surpasses-1900-tools/#respond"><span class="dsq-postid" data-dsqidentifier="23 http://blog.socialsourcecommons.org/?p=23">Leave a Comment</span></a></strong></span> <!--END .entry-meta .entry-header--> </div> <!--END .hentry--> </div> <!--BEGIN .hentry--> <div id="post-22" class="hentry p8 post publish author-gunner untagged y2007 m08 d05 h21 alt"> <h2 class="entry-title"><a href="https://blog.socialsourcecommons.org/2007/08/social-source-commons-podcast-on-netsquared/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Social Source Commons Podcast on NetSquared">Social Source Commons Podcast on NetSquared</a></h2> <span class="author vcard"><small>By <a class="url fn" href="https://blog.socialsourcecommons.org/author/gunner/" title="View all posts by gunner">gunner</a></span> <span class="published">on <abbr class="published-time" title="August 6, 2007 - 4:36 am">August 6, 2007</abbr></small></span> <!--BEGIN .entry-content .article--> <div class="entry-content article"> <div class="at-above-post-homepage addthis_tool" data-url="https://blog.socialsourcecommons.org/2007/08/social-source-commons-podcast-on-netsquared/"></div><p><a href="http://www.brittbravo.com/about.html">Britt Bravo</a> recently interviewed Aspiration’s Allen Gunn about <a href="http://socialsourcecommons.org/">Social Source Commons</a>, and posted the discussion as a <a href="http://netsquared.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=241297">podcast on the NetSquared site</a>.
